Circa a 200 miglia a sud-est di los Angeles e 6 metri sotto il livello del mare, un gruppo di esclusi vive in mezzo al deserto.
Non si tratta di una colonia di hippy, solo di un gruppo di persone che hanno girato le spalle alla società e che vogliono essere lasciati in pace.
In questa pianura spoglia ed arida, vediamo qualche roulotte, un’auto delle case improvvisate.
Le persone che abitano qui rispondono ai nomi fantasiosi di Bulletproof (Antiproiettile), Insane Wayne (Pazzo Wayne) e Bus Kenny. Passano le giornate perdendo tempo, facendo qualche lavoretto, chiacchierando e vivendo.
Per alcuni di loro questo posto isolato senza elettricità o acqua corrente è un indirizzo temporaneo, per altri una vacanza permanente.
Un veterano del Vietnam che ora si fa chiamare Cindy ha aperto un salone da parrucchiera.
